Karnala Fort

Description

Karnala Fort, also known as Funnel Hill,  is a historic hill fort in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, located near Panvel and a populer one-day trek destination.It sits within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, is approximately 1,500 feet high, and is known for its distinctive pinnacle and strategic importance in guarding the Bor pass. The fort’s history includes periods under the Devagiri Yadavas, Gujarat Sultanate, Marathas, and Portuguese, with its ruins being a key feature of the sanctuary.  

Location and access
  • LocationRaigad district, Maharashtra, about 10 km from Panvel and 65 km from Mumbai. 
  • TravelIt is situated along the Mumbai-Goa highway. 
  • Public TransportFrom Panvel station, take a local bus to the sanctuary. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are also available, with some buses to the fort being difficult to find for return trips. 
Trek details
  • DifficultyThe trek is considered easy to moderate. 
  • DurationThe trek to the top takes about 1 to 2 hours. 
  • RouteThere are two routes, with the main one being a well-defined path through the sanctuary, and a steeper, more challenging shortcut for adventurous trekkers. 
  • Best time to visitMonsoon season is popular, but the path can be slippery. 
Fort features
  • Strategic importance
    The fort overlooks the Bor pass, which was a crucial trade route connecting the Konkan coast to the Deccan Plateau. 

  • Pinnacle
    A 125-foot-high basalt pillar, sometimes called “Pandu’s tower,” stands on the upper level and was used as a watchtower. 

  • Inscriptions
    The fort has two inscriptions, one in Marathi on the lower gate and another in Persian on the upper gate. 

Sanctuary and entry
  • Bird SanctuaryThe fort is within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, which is home to many bird species. 
  • Entry FeeRs. 30 for adults and Rs. 15 for children to enter the sanctuary. 
  • TimingsThe park is open from 6 AM to 6 PM.
